The electricity causes the electrons from the zinc to bond to the metal, creating an extremely thin protective coating.

Electro galvanized wire rope is shiny and smooth – as the zinc coating layer is extremely thin and even. This makes it a great option for applications where appearances matter and a shiny finish is desired.

Hot Dip Galvanized Wire Rope

Hot-dip galvanization is the other form of galvanizing. Zinc is heated up in a large vat until it becomes molten at 860 F°. The wires, which will form the rope, are then cleaned to ensure that there are no particles of dust, metal shavings, or other contaminants on the cable before it is completely immersed in the molten zinc. 

Once the wires are completely coated, they are removed and cooled before they are formed into strands to create the wire rope. 

The process creates a thicker zinc coating that is 5 to 10 times thicker than electro-galvanized coating. This provides optimal protection against rust and wear, making the rope extremely resistant to abrasions – as well as stiffer and stronger.

Pros and Cons

Each type of galvanized wire rope offers benefits and downsides, and each is designed to be used for different purposes. 

Costs

Hot dipped galvanized rope is up to 40% more expensive than electro-galvanized rope because it is heavier and stronger. However, one of the reasons why electro galvanized wire rope is less expensive is because it is lighter and smaller – which means that it is also not as strong as hot dipped galvanized rope. 

Weight

Hot-dip galvanization creates a thick coating, which increases the weight of the wire rope significantly. Electro galvanized wire rope is much lighter and thinner, so it can be used for more delicate applications. 

Durability

Since electro galvanization creates an extremely thin coating, it does not offer as much protection as the thicker hot-dipped galvanization process. Electro galvanized wire rope is far less durable. It is not made to be used in applications where it will be exposed to extreme elements or high levels of friction. 

Flexibility

Electro galvanized wire rope is far more flexible than hot dipped galvanized rope because the thin coating does not compromise the rope’s movement as much. Hot dipped galvanized rope is much stiffer and sturdier, which does make it better for use where movement is discouraged, like in lifting and rigging. 

Appearance

Electro galvanized wire rope is shiny and has a very even zinc coating. Hot-dipped galvanized rope has a dull appearance, and the zinc coating can be uneven or streaky. Therefore, it is often not used in architectural applications for design purposes – since it is not as appealing as electro galvanized wire rope. 

When to Use Hot Dipped Galvanized Rope

This type of wire rope is best for applications where the cables will be exposed to harsh weather elements, such as rain, heat, cold temperatures, and wind. It is commonly used on construction sites for setting fences and perimeters – and is generally used in lifting and rigging cranes. Hot dipped galvanized ropes are also often used in applications where the rope must resist high levels of friction, like pulleys and ziplines. The thick zinc coating prevents the rope from wearing down quickly.

Industrial chains are used for all types of applications across numerous industries. Not only are they extremely strong, but they are super durable and flexible. Chains can be used on anything from attaching a swing to a swing set to tying down heavy cargo – all the way to overhead lifting equipment. 

 However, the grades of industrial chains are an extremely important distinction to categorize what type of chain is best used for a given application. For instance, according to the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Standards B30.9, Section 9-1.5 and 9-1.8, the minimum grade for overhead lifting chains are 80 and above. 

 In addition to understanding the chain grades and their ideal situations, you need to know about the difference between stainless-steel chains, galvanized chains, and bright finishing.

 There are five main grades of chain: 30, 43, 70, 80, and 100. Grade 120 is a newer product available for extremely heavy-duty applications, but it is less common.  

Each number is the maximum stress that the chain can take per millimeter squared. So, for instance, Grade 30 chain’s maximum stress is 300 newtons per millimeter squared.

Grade 30

Grade 30 is considered to be a general-purpose chain that can be used for a variety of applications. These applications do not require extremely high strength. Grade 30 is the least strong chain type. Depending on the chain diameter size, it can sustain a working load limit between 1,300 to 6,900 lbs. 

Grade 30 is commonly known as Proof Coil chain or Common Coil chain and is comprised of low-strength carbon steel. This type of steel is quite malleable and rust resistant, but they are not as strong as other types of alloys. It is also less expensive than high carbon or stainless-steel chains.

 Grade 30 chain can be used in numerous types of applications, such as:

  • Light construction
  • Lead securement
  • Guard rails
  • Logging
  • Agricultural use
  • Marine industry

 It is important to note that Grade 30 industrial chains should not be used for overhead lifting as its working load limit is too low.

  • Grade 43 is also commonly labeled as High-Test Chain or G-4 chain and is comprised of carbon steel, which is known for its high tensile strength and wear resistance. This makes Grade 43 the optimal choice for applications such as:
    • Towing
    • Heavy duty trucking
    • Farming
    • Construction
    • Guard chains
    • Container securement

Grade 70 chain is about 20 percent stronger than Grade 43. It is made from a heat-treated carbon steel that is incredibly sturdy and durable. Grade 70 chain is also usually embossed with a number 7, 70, or 700 on each link.

 Grade 70 has a working load limit available between 3,150 to 15,800 lbs. and is most commonly used for:

Grade 80 Alloy Chain is a far more heavy-duty chain that is certified for overhead lifting and other applications which require tremendous strength. It is made of an alloy steel mixture which makes it extremely strong, durable, and rugged. Many Grade 80 industrial chains are available in a black lacquer finish for further protection from wear and scratching. 

 Grade 80 chain has a maximum working load limit range of 3,500 to 47,700 lbs. It also meets the ASTM’s (American Society of Testing and Materials) standards for overhead lifting as it can be elongated by at least 20 percent before fracturing. In addition to use in overhead lifting applications as a sling component, Grade 80 can be used for:

  • Heavy duty towing
  • Rigging
  • Tie-downs
  • Mining

Grade 100

Grade 100 Chain

Next to Grade 120, Grade 100 chain is the strongest type of chain offered by most industrial hardware suppliers. Grade 100 chain is also comprised of alloy steel – which is heat treated for higher strength and durability.

One of the first things to consider when purchasing industrial cable for projects or construction is the material it is made of. Cable is generally made of steel, as this type of metal is strong and very durable. Industrial cable is sold in two types: galvanized and stainless steel.

 When you are looking to buy industrial cable, you will see that cable sizes are available in both finishes, as the sizing refers to the number of strands and wires.

 For instance, a 7X19 galvanized cable is made of seven strands which are composed of 19 wires woven together and galvanized. A 7X19 stainless steel cable is also made of the same number of strands and wires – but they are made of different material. 

 Each type of metal finishing has its own strengths and weaknesses and the type that you use is quite dependent on the application. Choosing the wrong type for a project could be disastrous – not to mention dangerous – as the incorrect type could wear down too quickly or not be strong enough for its intended use.

 So, first and foremost, it is critical to understand the main differences between galvanized and stainless steel.

 Let’s dive in. 

 What is Galvanized Cable?

 Galvanized steel cable is made of traditional steel which is coated in a thin layer of zinc. This coating helps to protect the steel from corrosion, as untreated steel has iron will rust if it is exposed to water or moisture. 

 There are four different ways that steel may be galvanized. 

 The first (and typically most common with industrial hardware) is hot-dip galvanizing. The metal pieces are dipped into a flux solution of zinc ammonium chloride which creates an even protective coating.

 Steel cables may also be electrogalvanized, which creates a very thin layer over the metal via an electric current. The zinc solution conducts this electricity, which positively charges the ions and attaches to the steel. This creates an extremely thin layer that has been mechanically-bonded.

 Another method of galvanization is sherardizing, which is when the zinc layer is applied with heat. The metal is covered in powdered zinc rather than a liquid solution and placed into an airtight container that is heated to an extreme temperature and then cooled. This also creates a thin layer, but it is more commonly used on smaller metal objects. 

 The last method of galvanization is metallic spraying. A zinc solution is sprayed over the metal object and then heated so that the coating sticks to the surface. This method is less protective than others, but it is also less likely to peel or flake off over time.

What is Stainless Steel Cable?

 Stainless steel cable is made of an iron alloy containing at least 10.5% chromium and may also be mixed with nickel, silicon, manganese, nitrogen, or carbon. This chromium is naturally corrosion-resistant, so stainless steel does not require an additional galvanized coating for protection.

 Stainless steel is produced by melting together all of the raw materials for 8 to 12 hours until it is completely molten. The excess carbon is then removed by pouring the molten metal into an Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) converter. Additional elements may also be added in the converter.

 Molten stainless steel is then tuned, which helps to improve the consistency by stirring the metal and maintaining an even temperature until it is ready to be formed. 

 Stainless steel is quite a bit harder and stronger than other types of iron and steel. 

It may be cast in several different ways:

  •     Forming – pouring molten metals into pre-formed shapes or molds.
  •     Hot rolling – heated steel is passed through rolls to form wires, bars, plates, strips, or sheets.
  •     Cold rolling – used for precise shapes or the production of wide sheets.
  •     Annealing – this involves heating and cooling the metal repeatedly to soften the steel to improve ductility.
  •     Cutting – stainless steel may also be cut after being formed into sheets by using sharp knives, saws, high-speed blades, flame cutters, or ionized gas.

There are two different grades of stainless steel: 304 and 316. 

 Grade 304 is far more common, largely due to its shiny finishing. It is made with a higher percentage of chromium, typically between 18 to 20%, which is exceptionally corrosion resistant. It is commonly used in:

  • Appliances
  • Fasteners
  • Piping

 Grade 316 is made with a high amount of chromium, as well as nickel, silicon, manganese, and carbon with a significant amount of molybdenum. This element has an extremely high melting point and it is added to the alloy to make the metal even stronger. 

 Grade 316 stainless steel is commonly used for:

  • Chemical storage
  • Refinery equipment
  • Marine environments
  • Medical devices

 Both 7×7 and 7×19 stainless steel cable are available for industrial purposes. 

What are the Major Differences? 

 In addition to the chemical composition and finishing processes, there are some important differences to note between galvanized steel and stainless steel.

 First, is the price. Galvanized cable is typically less expensive than stainless steel because the process is much quicker and involves less steps. Stainless steel is also more expensive because of the added elements, which increases the cost. 

 Another difference is strength. Stainless steel is significantly stronger than galvanized steel, which has a lower breaking point. The exterior layer of zinc may wear off over time if the cable is exposed to a lot of friction, which weakens the steel beneath.

 The next major difference is wear resistance. Although stainless steel is exceptionally strong, the mixture of nickel actually softens the metal and will present signs of wear and tear sooner than galvanized cable would. The shiny exterior also shows scratches and dents more than galvanized metal does. 

 The appearance of both metals is also different. Galvanized steel is not as shiny as stainless steel and appears to be a bit duller and streakier. While the appearance of cable is typically not incredibly important, it may matter in some applications. 

 And finally, the most significant difference between galvanized steel cable and stainless steel cable is the way they are both used.

When is it Best to Use Galvanized?

Since galvanized metal is not as strong as stainless steel, it is commonly used for lighter-duty applications that do not require extremely heavy weights. It is also far more cost-effective, so it is typically used when budgets are tight.

 Finally, galvanized industrial cable is best in environments that are corrosive, such as on boats in saltwater or near chemical compounds. And although the zinc coating will eventually wear, it does provide an additional layer on cables which are used with pulleys to reduce friction. 

 Galvanized cables are typically used for:

  • Hanging cables or wires
  • Pulley and winches
  • Stage rigging
  • Motorized doors (such as garage doors)
  • Exercise equipment

 7×7 galvanized cables are often used in construction for towing equipment or building materials. 7×19 galvanized wires are used for heavier purposes, since it is more flexible and can handle higher levels of stress without snapping.

When is it Best to Use Stainless Steel?

Since stainless steel cable is extremely strong, it is largely used in more heavy-duty applications to secure heavier weights. It is also best in more moist environments as it is extremely rust resistant. 

Stainless steel also tends to last longer than galvanized steel in certain environments. Therefore, the higher cost ends up evening out as it does not need to be replaced as quickly.

 Stainless steel cables are commonly used in:

  • Aircraft
  • Rigging and overhead lifting
  • Load and cargo securement
  • Fall protection barriers
  • Guy-wires for added stability to structures like ship masts, wind turbines, and large tents
  • Zip lines
  • Boat docks
  • Overhead doors

 As with galvanized cable, 7×7 stainless steel cable is used when flexibility is not necessary. 7X19 stainless steel cable is best for heavier applications that involve more movement and friction.
