1. Product Liability Insurance Protects Suppliers Legally

All insurance policies are designed to protect the policyholder if specific circumstances occur. Product liability insurance will protect a hardware supplier should the equipment they sell cause injury or damage to the buyer.

It’s important to note that this policy does not stop a customer from filing a claim or winning their case for a defective product. If there is evidence that the hardware was defective and caused injury to damage to the buyer, the payout will come out of the insurance policy. This protects the business from having to fork over hefty payouts themselves.

Of course, there are limitations to product coverage. Most product liability insurance policies include coverage for damages that are a result of design flaws, product defects, or inadequate warnings from the manufacturer. However, the policy may not provide coverage under all situations.

Industrial hardware suppliers need to understand that this type of insurance is not the same as a product warranty. Most distributors offer a warranty or product guarantee, such as a full product replacement if a defect is found within the first year of purchase.

For instance, say that a customer purchases a wire rope. However, during the installation process, a wire strand snaps and scratches the installer’s hand, which requires stitches. The product’s warranty would provide the customer with a full wire rope replacement. However, the supplier could be held responsible for the medical costs – in which case, they would use their product liability insurance coverage.

Having a solid warranty and product guarantee is just a starting point for protecting your business. But to ensure that you are completely legally protected, you will need additional insurance.

3. Product Liability Insurance is an Affordable Investment

Nearly all businesses have some form of liability insurance in place. While it is not required by law, it is highly encouraged. Product liability may be an add-on to a general liability insurance coverage or a standalone policy.

Hardware suppliers should really view this as an investment rather than a necessary operational cost. As with all insurance policies, you don’t think about it much until it comes in handy – or you wish you had better coverage. Passing a rigging equipment inspection is an incredibly important part of the process for a plethora of reasons. Of course, a project cannot begin until it passes a full inspection. This is to ensure safety for anyone on-site and prevent accidents that could cause millions of dollars in damage.

According to the latest data, there have been nearly 250 fatal and serious accidents involving rigging equipment since 2010. Further, there have been over 800 major OSHA violations related to overhead lifting equipment adding up to $2.3 million in fees. The most common incidents that resulted in injuries and onsite fatalities were due to:

  • Load swing, drop, or instability
  • Loads dropping because of wrong equipment setup or equipment failure

1.  Enforce Proper Equipment Installation

Every single piece of equipment needs to be installed and held in place exactly as directed – otherwise, it causes serious safety hazards if not done as directed.

The first step is to make sure that only certified personnel are in charge of setting up the equipment. This must be a qualified rigger, according to OSHA. Each side of the transport chain has a clevis grab hook which connects to a tie-down hook or anchor. 

Ratchet Strap Assemblies 

A ratchet strap assembly includes tie-down webbing, which is a polyester strap, and ratchet buckles that connect the webbing. These buckles create tension and can secure up to 24,000 lb loads. These may be used in place of chains as the polyester webbing is less likely to damage the load.

Industrial wire ropes are designed for extreme resilience and strength. They can withstand thousands of pounds of pressure and be used on all types of applications. However, issues with the wire rope installation process can significantly decrease its longevity and even its capacity and durability.

When wire ropes are not used properly, it can create an unsafe environment. The rope can snap, even if the load it’s supporting is below its maximum load limit. In a recent incident noted by the IMCA (International Marine Contractors Association), a wire rope sling rope broke due to improper installation. A crew member was seriously injured after the sling disconnected and hit the worker.

Many of these common accidents are easily avoidable through correct wire rope installation. Here are five of the most common mistakes made and how to prevent them on your worksite.

1. Incorrectly Measuring the Rope Diameter

Determining the diameter of the wire rope is an essential step of the installation process. Installers are required to double-check that the correct diameter rope is being used, as this impacts the rope’s breaking strength and load limit.

Wire ropes are measured with a parallel-jawed caliper (also called a machinist’s caliper). This is placed over the wire rope to measure the diameter – but if the rope is inserted at the wrong angle, you will get an inaccurate result.

 The strands of a wire rope must be flush against the measuring portion of the caliper. If a raised strand is at the top, the measurement will have a smaller dimension, which could affect breaking strength calculations.

2. Unreeling the Wire Rope Wrong

Wire ropes are reeled onto these spools for easy handling and shipments, as it prevents the rope from getting tangled or crushed. But unreeling the wire rope incorrectly can cause severe damage, such as snagged wires, twists, kinks, or unraveled strands.

A common mistake that is often made is to unreel the wire rope by laying the spool vertically on its axis. The wire rope has to be yanked off of the spool, which increases the likelihood of it getting kinked or twisted. The wire rope should also not touch the ground as it is unreeled, as this could damage the wires as well.

Instead, the reeled wire rope should be placed on a shaft that allows the spool to turn 360°. It also should require two people, one to slowly pull the rope off of the spool in a straight line and another to regulate the speed by controlling the turn rate.

3. Poorly Installing Wire Clips



Occasionally a drop forged clip is added during wire rope installation to create a load-bearing eye or to connect two cables together. These small but mighty pieces only diminish a wire rope’s strength by around 10%, if they are added correctly.

Many mistakes are made when installing wire rope clips, such as:

  •         Using fewer clips than recommended by the manufacturer
  •         Incorrectly spacing the clips
  •         Placing the saddle on the wrong end of the wire rope
  •         Using the wrong size of wire clip
  •         Not tightening the clips enough

These little issues can cause the wire rope to slip out of the clip. It is very important to follow the directions and use the right number of clips with the correct spacing in-between, depending on the rope’s diameter and approximate load weight.

4. Cutting the Wire Rope the Wrong Way

Sometimes a damaged wire rope can be repaired through a method called seizing. First, the rope is cut at a straight angle, then a wire is tightly wound around this end to prevent the strands from unraveling.

Two methods can be used to securely seize a wire rope. First, it can be placed at a right angle between the starting and ending point of the seizing. The wire is then wrapped around this angled piece to hold it in place, and the ends are twisted together to secure it. Another option is to wrap the seizing wire around and twist the two end pieces together, creating a tourniquet type of attachment.

The type of end preparations recommended depends on several factors. This includes the diameter of the rope and the number of wires and strands. In some cases, double seizing and fuse welding is required for additional securement. Failing to follow these instructions could result in the core or strands of the wire rope to slip and unravel.

5. Not Storing Your Wire Rope Safely

Although wire ropes are usually damaged due to improper use, they can get ruined during storage as well. Failing to follow through with routine maintenance and storage recommendations could cause the wire rope to rust, unravel, or kink. Further, keeping your wire rope on the ground, in wet areas, or directly in hot sunlight can cause it to break down faster.

Maintaining industrial hardware the right way can improve their long-term performance and use. This includes following all instructions during wire rope installation, as well as storage and upkeep. Wire ropes should be cleaned before going into storage and may need lubricant from time to time to protect the wires from drying out.

Aircraft cable is a critical piece of equipment that is found in all types of planes, from small two-seaters to Boeing 737s and even military aircrafts.  

The aircraft hardware cable industry has gone through quite a bit of ups and downs lately. The COVID-19 pandemic caused production and demand to plummet, as airlines cut back on flights and aircraft purchases. However, as travel bans are being lifted, the market is expected to bounce back stronger than ever before, with a projected 6.2% market growth through 2028.  

But this type of cable is high in demand for more than just aircraft production. You may be surprised to see that many industrial hardware distributors have aircraft cable offered in their inventory.

  1. All Hardware Cables Must Meet Specific Aircraft Quality Standards

Aircraft hardware cables are used primarily for tie-downs, as well as for stabilizing, fastening, and lifting extremely heavy pieces of equipment. Therefore, this type of cable has to be constructed to ensure that it is durable and safe. 

Aircraft cable has set quality standards which are determined by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and the USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) for any cable produced or used in the United States. These guidances ensure that the cables meet regulatory requirements for aircraft equipment. There are set standards for all types and uses of aircraft cable, depending on the application, structure, and so on. 

The materials used in aircraft cable are quite specific, which is what primarily sets them apart from other types of industrial cables. Traditional hardware has too low of a tensile strength and heat ratings, so aircraft cables are only made from high carbon steel, typically 316 or 302/304 grade.  

  1. Aircraft Cable is Similar to Extreme Strength Wire Rope

Due to their appearance, aircraft cables are often mistaken for wire ropes. These are similar in some aspects, such as the overall design of construction. 

 Wire ropes are constructed with several strands of wires which are woven together to create an extremely strong cable. There are multiple configurations, depending on the number of wires and strands used in its construction. The more wires used, the more flexible the wire rope will be.  

There are also several types of cores which are utilized in wire ropes and industrial cables. These may be fiber cores, independent wire ropes, or wire strands. These can provide either added flexibility or strength, depending on the intended use and load limit.  

Aircraft cables are constructed in a similar fashion to wire ropes, but they have their own sizing and construction standards. Aircraft cables can be made from wires ranging between 3/64” to ¼”. 

The configurations for industrial wire ropes compared to aircraft cable are also slightly different. Most aircraft cables are constructed with 7×19, 7×7, 3×7, 1×19, or 1×7 configurations. This refers to the number of strands used as well as the number of wires per strand. Industrial wire ropes are most often offered in 6×15, 6×19, 6×26, or 6×36 configurations. 

Ultimately, you could say that aircraft cables are essentially an extremely strong wire rope – but there are important differences, and these two pieces of hardware cannot be used interchangeably.  

3. Aircraft Cables can be Used for Many Things  

Although aircraft cables are primarily used for aircraft construction and transportation, this equipment is quite versatile. Thanks to its extremely durable design and high tensile strength, it can be used for far more than just aircrafts.  

Some other common applications for aircraft cables include: 

  • Boating and Marine Applications – Stainless steel cables are often used for maritime purposes, since it is naturally corrosion resistant. Aircraft cables may be used for securing boats to the dock, as well as hoisting them out of the water. 
  • Pulley Systems – Since pulley wires must resist the natural friction it encounters, the cables must be extremely durable. Aircraft cables are often used in this type of apparatus, particularly for lifting heavy loads.

Most stainless steel hardware suppliers agree that stainless steel is one of the highest quality materials to use. This metal is extremely strong, durable, and known to be naturally corrosion resistant. It is also used for all types of industrial hardware pieces, from hoists and shackles to wire ropes and chains.

But there are some things about stainless steel that you may be surprised to learn. If stainless steel hardware is not used or cared for correctly, it can cause major issues. Even though stainless steel is extremely strong, it is not indestructible.

But first, let’s cover the basics of stainless steel.

Stainless steel is an alloy, as it contains between 10 to 30% chromium. Other elements are also added to the steel to influence properties such as strength, shine, and corrosion resistance. The most common elements added are nickel, chromium, aluminum, nitrogen, selenium, and titanium.

Steel is incredibly common in the US, making up 95% of all metal production – but only 7% of this metal is used to create stainless steel. This is one of the reasons why stainless steel industrial hardware is more expensive than other materials.

So, before you purchase hardware made from this material, it is important to know about factors that could impact its use and durability.

1. Stainless Steel isn’t Completely Corrosion Resistant

Most people assume stainless steel is completely resistant to rusting and corrosion. While it is highly resistant to water corrosion, this statement is not entirely true.

Stainless steel is available in over 100 different grades. Some of these grades are more corrosion resistant than others and are designed for specific environments. 304 and 316 are the most common grades used for industrial hardware.

Grade 304 is naturally corrosion-resistant, as it contains 8% nickel and 18% chromium. However, it will corrode if it is in contact with chloride solutions, such as saltwater. 316 is far more corrosion resistant to chloride ions, so this grade is recommended for marine applications.

It is important to consider environmental factors, such as the weather, temperature, and exposure. Failing to use the ideal type could cause the metal to corrode quickly. It is highly recommended to consult with an industrial hardware distributor to discuss the best grade depending on your intent.

2. Stainless Steel Cannot be Used with Aluminum

Another lesser-known fact about stainless steel is that it can have a negative reaction with other metals, specifically aluminum. Aluminum and stainless steel cause galvanic corrosion, which can ruin the metals.

The reason this reaction occurs is that the electrons in the aluminum transfer into the stainless steel. This will deteriorate the aluminum, causing it to rust must faster than normal. So, stainless steel industrial hardware should never be used with aluminum pieces.

Since these metals are often used for pieces like cables, it is important to keep the two separated. If they must be in close contact, a rubber casing can be applied to prevent galvanic corrosion.  

3. Stainless Steel can Repair Itself

As odd as it sounds, stainless steel can protect itself naturally from corrosive elements. The metal produces an oxide that coats its exterior in a thin layer. This coating is invisible to the naked eye, but it helps to coat the metal and protect it from external elements, like water, which could corrode it.

This layer forms best in oxygen-rich environments. Stainless steel hardware that is used in enclosed spaces may not have as thick of a protective surface and could be slightly more prone to corrosion.

This layer is also self-healing. If it is disturbed or cleaned off, it will start to form once again to protect the stainless steel interior.

4. Stainless Steel is Recyclable

Did you know that stainless steel is one of the most environmentally friendly metals? This material is highly sustainable as it can be completely recycled over and over again. About 88% of the stainless steel used today is already recycled.

There is also no toxic runoff emitted by stainless steel during production, so it has a minimal negative environmental impact. There is also little waste from stainless steel and by-products such as the dust and sludge can be used to create other metals, including zinc.

5. Stainless Steel Expands

Another surprising fact to learn about stainless steel is that its properties are influenced by temperatures. Warmer weather can actually cause the metal to expand, while colder temperatures cause it to contract.

While this change is typically rather insignificant in industrial hardware, it can change the size of larger structures. For instance, the Eiffel Tower is 6 inches taller in the summer than it is during the wintertime.

This is a factor to take into consideration if the stainless steel hardware is going to be in an environment with extreme temperature changes. While the external temperature might not have much of an effect, extreme heat can.

Some grades of steel stand up to high temperatures better than others. For instance, 304-grade steel can withstand heat up to 1600° F without melting. Grade 316 has a lower heat resistance, while 330-grade stainless steel resists oxidation at temperatures up to 2000° F.

But there are many different types of industrial cables that are designed for specific purposes. Opting for the wrong type could end in disaster, as the cable may warp or even break if it is not specifically designed for that purpose.

1. Types of Metals

One of the first differentiations between the types of industrial cables is the metal used in its construction. Since these cables are used for added support or stability, they are made from metals that are highly regarded for strength and durability.

Steel is by far the most common material used in industrial cable construction. However, there are various types of steel, with the two main categories being stainless steel and galvanized.

Stainless steel is an alloy, meaning that it is made of several elements. Typically iron, chromium, and nickel are added to the steel, which gives it its unique shiny appearance. This also protects the metal from rust and corrosion. Stainless steel cables are often used in marine rigging and hoisting applications since the metal will not corrode in saltwater.

Galvanized steel is coated in a protective layer of zinc, which gives it a higher breaking strength than stainless steel. However, it is not as naturally resistant to corrosion and cannot be used near water. Galvanized steel cables are commonly used for industrial applications, such as logging, hoisting, and rigging.

Both galvanized cable and stainless steel cables may also come with vinyl coatings. This creates a PVC sheath around the wires, protecting them from exterior elements like water or direct sunlight. They may also be applied to make the wires more visible for safety purposes.

Occasionally, other types of metals are used such as Phos Bronze. This is a brass alloy and is commonly only used for electrical cable construction since this metal is highly conductive. Industrial cable may also be made from bright steel, which means it is not coated and is made strictly from steel. This is a very strong metal, but also prone to corrosion.

2. Wire Strands

Another key differentiation between types of industrial cable is the size and number of wire strands used in its construction. Most industrial cables come in strand groupings of 7×7 or 7×19.


7×7 industrial cables are constructed of 7 strands which are made up of 7 wires each. This makes for a very stiff wire that is ideal for construction purposes. It is also widely used in aircraft and automotive applications.


7X19 industrial cables have 7 strands which are made from 19 wires. This makes the cable more flexible while simultaneously increasing its strength. 7X19 wires are often used in applications that must withstand movement and friction, such as sailboat riggings, pulley systems, and overhead cranes.

Both 7×7 and 7×19 industrial cables are also sold in varying diameters. This is the measurement of the wires used in each strand, which can range from 1/16” to 3/8”.

3. Core

 Every industrial cable has a central core that the wire strands wrap around. This provides the cable with stability, while also allowing for some flexibility. There are three main types of cable cores offered:

Fiber Core (FC)

Fibers like hemp, sisal, or most commonly, polypropylene, can be used in the center of the cable. This is not often the ideal choice for industrial cable and is more often found in wire ropes. The reason for this is because fiber cores are not extremely durable; however, they do allow for extreme flexibility.

Wire Strand Core (WSC) 

This uses a singular wire in the center of the industrial cable as the core. A WSC cable is less flexible than a fiber core, has higher heat resistance, and additional strength. However, the singular wire core is not ideal for extreme applications with heavy weights or tension.

Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC)

An independent wire rope core uses one of the strands as the core. So, in a 7×7 cable, one strand of 7 wires is in the center, while the other 6 are woven around it. This provides a good balance of support and flexibility. It also protects the entire cable from being crushed, making it the ideal option for heavy-duty use.

Industrial chains are used for all types of applications across numerous industries. Not only are they extremely strong, but they are super durable and flexible. Chains can be used on anything from attaching a swing to a swing set to tying down heavy cargo – all the way to overhead lifting equipment.

However, industrial chain grades are an extremely important distinction that help categorize what type of chain is best used for a given application. For instance, according to the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Standards B30.9, Section 9-1.5 and 9-1.8, the minimum grade for overhead lifting chains is 80 and above.

In addition to understanding industrial chain grades and their ideal situations, you need to know about the difference between stainless-steel chains, galvanized chains, and bright finishing.

An experienced industrial hardware supplier can certainly help you find the right chain grades and finishes for your needs. But it’s important to understand the differences so you know exactly when and why you should use various grades during a project.

 There are five main grades of chain: 30, 43, 70, 80, and 100. Grade 120 is a newer product available for extremely heavy-duty applications, but it is less common. 

Each number is the maximum stress that the chain can take per millimeter squared. So, for instance, Grade 30 chain’s maximum stress is 300 newtons per millimeter squared.

Let’s break down each of these chain grades.

Grade 30

Grade 30 is considered to be a general-purpose chain that can be used for a variety of applications. These applications do not require extremely high strength. Being the lowest of all the chain grades, grade 30 is the weakest chain type. It can sustain a working load limit between 1,300 to 6,900 lbs, depending on the chain diameter size.

Grade 30 is commonly known as Proof Coil chain or Common Coil chain and is comprised of low-strength carbon steel. This type of steel is quite malleable and rust resistant, but they are not as strong as other types of alloys. It is also less expensive than high carbon or stainless-steel chains.

This chain grade is useful for numerous applications, such as:

  •         Light construction
  •         Lead securement
  •         Guard rails
  •         Logging
  •         Agricultural use
  •         Marine industry

It is important to note that Grade 30 should not be used for overhead lifting as its working load limit is too low.

Grade 43 is also commonly labeled as High-Test Chain or G-4 chain and is comprised of carbon steel, which is known for its high tensile strength and wear resistance. As a result, this chain grade is the optimal choice for applications such as:

  •         Towing
  •         Heavy duty trucking
  •         Farming
  •         Construction
  •         Guard chains
  •         Container securement

Grade 70 chain is also usually embossed with a number 7, 70, or 700 on each link.

Chains within this industrial chain grade have a working load limit available between 3,150 to 15,800 lbs. and are most commonly used for:

Since this type of chain is often used on trucks, it is also known as Transport chain, Truckers chain, or Binder chain. Although grade 70 is high up on the list of chain grades, it is not rated for overhead lifting.

Grade 80

Grade 80 Alloy Chain is a far more heavy-duty chain that is certified for overhead lifting and other applications which require tremendous strength. It is made of an alloy steel mixture which makes it extremely strong, durable, and rugged. Many Grade 80 industrial chains are available in a black lacquer finish for further protection from wear and scratching.

This industrial chain grade has a maximum working load limit range of 3,500 to 47,700 lbs. It also meets the ASTM’s (American Society of Testing and Materials) standards for overhead lifting as it can be elongated by at least 20 percent before fracturing. In addition to use in overhead lifting applications as a sling component, Grade 80 can be used for:

  •         Heavy duty towing
  •         Rigging
  •         Tie-downs
  •         Mining

Grade 100

Next to Grade 120, Grade 100 chain is the highest industrial chain grade offered by most commercial hardware suppliers. Grade 100 chain is also comprised of alloy steel – which is heat treated for higher strength and durability.

Grade 100 chain is available with working load limits between 4,300 to 35,300 lbs. It is designed to be used in a wide variety of applications, such as:
