The Mechanics Behind Wire Rope Resistance

Steel rope, also known as wire rope, consists of three key elements that give it incomparable strength and safety:

  • Wire. At the most basic level is the wire rope itself. The individual wire rope alone don’t represent much in terms of capacity, but taken as a whole they can distribute weight in an incredibly efficient way.
  • Strands. The strands of a steel wire rope are created by placing the wires in a helical shape around the core of the wire rope. The strands are wrapped incredibly tight for maximum strength and cohesion.
  • Core. In the center of the wire rope there is a core, which provides adequate support for the wires. When it comes to core, there are three main options:
    • Fibre Core (FC).
    • Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC).
    • Wire Strand Core (WSC).

Available Options

  • Material. Steel grades widely used today are Extra Extra Improved Plowed Steel (EEIPS), Improved Plow Steel (IPS) or Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS); Stainless steel grades 304 and 316 are the most common.
  • Construction. This refers to the number of strands used, with different constructions more suitable for different applications.
  • Patterns and Braiding. Wires and cores can be configured for different functions.
  • Finishes. You have the option of coated or galvanized, depending on your need for corrosion resistance. Other finishes include bright, galvanized and stainless steel.
  • Lubrication. The type and amount of lubrication depends on the size, type and use of the rope.
